Level Contributor 73 posts Do Locals Really Hate Sandals Resorts? 12 years ago I feel like I have been verbally attacked (not on Tripadvisor) over my choice to stay at a Sandals Resort! I was told that I am exploiting people, do not care about Jamaica or the people, that tourists do not tip and that Sandals pays the lowest wage of any resort. Is this true? While I have stayed at Sandals, and plan to again next year, I tip everyone along the way and leave gifts for resort staff, take school supplies for the local school, go off the property and talk to people, etc. Like everyone else, I like to get away from all the day to day responsibilites and relax while on vacation, so this really has upset me. My assumption was that tourism provides locals with jobs, from the airlines to the drivers/porters to the resort/hotel staff - that is a good thing, isn't it? Also, taking along supplies for local schools and hospitals is, in my opinion, also good. Is there someone who can explain this to me (nicely please!! )

You guys are helping me feel better about this - thanks for the posts. I just want to have a great vacation AND help out where I can. Tripadvisor posters are amazing - thank you... 1, 292 posts 8. 't feel bad about your choice. Many people that complain about Sandals are misinformed. I've heard people complain about the "foreign owners" of it's actually owned by Jamaican Butch Stewart as mentioned above. And, also as mentioned above a job with Sandals is one of the most coveted on the island for tourism. I feel that many of these misinformed some of the negative stories from people who were not given a job at Sandals and are basically bad mouthing it for their own personal sour-grape syndrome. And, these misinformed people pass along the information 'as fact' since their 'friend' told them. It fairness to Sandals they have built with have helped the Jamaican economy in many, many ways! Go to the your continue to help the economy as you have done in the Jamaicans need your support!! 3, 654 posts 9. bnewb, "And, also as mentioned above a job with Sandals is one of the most coveted on the island for tourism.
